The Surf



	THE SURF There is a long sweeping beach that stretches from the boat launch area near town twenty miles south to the river mouth at San Gregorio. This gentle strip of sand is interrupted to the north by Punta Pequeña, an elevated shelf of sharp volcanic rock fracturing slowly into the sea. Boat Launch Area Punta Pequeña, or Little Point, is composed of a series of six points as the fishermen have counted them heading out to sea. The surf breaks at First, Second and Third Points face south and are in the lee of the prevailing northwesterly winds. 	First Point First Point, the closest to the boat launch area, is a point with a table rock that is under water at high tide. It is a bird rock. Surf rarely breaks here, but when it does, it can be a small, fine, precisely tooled right. It takes a huge south swell or a medium swell from its very narrow window. Mostly good Corvina fishing from the rock. Second Point Second Point with an exceptional amount of sand. Second Point Second Point breaks into a little bay with a rocky shore and a sandy bottom. A long small right break exquisitely formed and rideable at one foot and smaller. This is a family break with a panoramic overview from the cliff above. Good for learning, good for watching and good for nose riding when it gets bigger. Stingrays occasionally linger on the bottom. Keep your feet up.
	Entering the water at Third Point Third Point Third Point is the spot of dreams. Formed best when some sand is on the bottom, picks up south swells from 180° to 215°. A perfectly peeling wave for over 100 yards, if you ride all the way in, it can take five minutes to paddle back out. At low tide the shore is littered with jagged volcanic rock. Most people wear booties. Twenty people in the water makes it crowded. Take turns and be polite. Remember, Scorpion Bay is not LA, the people we surf with are the people we live with. Fourth Point and Beyond? Secret spots, et cetera, you check 'em out. There are stories of huge swells when the surf connects up from Fourth Point all the way past First Point into town. Terry Hansen took off at Fourth Point on a double over head wave, surfed through Third Point and went ashore at the walk down. He could hardly believe it. But the story of the big consistent swell that connects up all the points may require a campfire and a bottle of tequila to be fully realized.
